TYPE OF PRODUCT:

Paper in National Conference proceedings

LANGUAGE/S OF PRODUCT:

Greek

DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

The document presents the results of a research conducted with questionnaires among 458 subjects (upper-secondary school students and first year chemistry undergraduates) aiming at evaluating their level of chemical literacy. The questionnaire consisted of two main parts: a) Knowledge of basic chemistry concepts and b) Chemical explanation of every day phenomena
An important finding of the research was that first year chemistry undergraduates did not show a higher level of chemical literacy relative to the younger (by one year) third year secondary school students. Consequently, chemical literacy is a lifelong process and a constant battle.

COMMENTS ON THIS DOCUMENT:

The document points out that the evaluation of the level chemical literacy during secondary education does not imply the level of chemical literacy that a person can finally achieve. It only provides an indication whether the “seeds of chemical literacy” have been implanted in the students’ minds.
