TITLE OF THE INITIATIVE:

Science Fair at the school unit “Rhodian Pedia”

REFERENT(S):

Rhodian Pedia – Nursery, Primary, Secondary Private School situated in Rhodos Island

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INITIATIVE:

The science fair at the school “Rhodian Pedia” is an event that takes place every year on the first week of September. The event is organized by the teachers and a group of pupils of this private educational institution and involves a series of demonstration experiments, fun activities, games in several scientific fields (chemistry,physics, biology, geography, computers, environment, etc

OBJECTIVE OF THE INITIATIVE:

This initiative constitutes a type of informal education aiming at bringing science closer to the general public, at creating a positive attitude towards scientific knowledge, at cultivating the ability for inquiry about the physical world.

TARGET GROUP OF THE EVENT:

Pupils from 4 till 18 years old and their parents

ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE EVENT:

Demonstration experiments, fun activities and creative games in several scientific fields (chemistry,physics, biology, geography, computers, environment, etc)

IMPACT OF THE EVENT:

The event has local impact (Rhodos Island)

RESULTS REACHED:

The event has rising success during the seven consecutive years that it is organized. The last science fair (September 2009) was attended by 250 pupils and approximately 200 parents. The event is considered already a tradition for the educational community of the island.

EVALUATION OF THE INITIATIVE:

This initiative is a typical form of non-formal education which affects largely the attitudes of the general public towards science and chemistry in particular. A science fair popularizes science and can stimulate scientific thinking and inquiry. Care should be taken however so that the activities are presented by people who are scientists themselves, so that the knowledge offered is scientifically sound.
