Superconductors

Step 1 - Activities

Stoichiometric calculations for the preparation of a high temperature superconductor: YBCO (YBa2Cu3O7)

In order to synthesize YBCO you need:
Y2O3;
BaO2;
CuO;

YBCO formation takes place according to the following reaction:

½ Y2O3 + 2BaO2 + 3CuO → YBa2Cu3O7 + 3/4 O2

Activity 1.1) Stoichiometric calculations

Calculate the amount of Y2O3, BaO2 and CuO that have to be weighed to prepare 10 g YBCO. Verify the correctness of the calculation checking the total weight of the reagents to be used: does it correspond to 10 g? If not, why does it happen? Verify the correctness of the exceeding weight.
