Step 2 - Activities

Make a solution of bluestone. For its preparation use 20 g CuSO4.5H20 and 100 ml water. Put a nail (ordinary one, made of steel) into this solution and let it there over night. Another day, surface of the nail will be covered by copper and the solution turn to be green – it indicates formation of ferrous sulphate. Copper is more noble metal than iron. Because of this, copper is excluded from the solution and in the same time iron is dissolved. This reaction takes place in close surrounding area of the nail, so the copper settle on the nail surface.
