Partners' Institution:
Technical University of Gabrovo
Project's period (from/to):
01 March 2010 - 30 May 2010
WPs concerned:
WP 2 - Identification of barriers and success factors in Life Long Learning of scientific subjects

Objectives of activities carried out:
1. Collecting and reviewing main publications and documents concerning the analysis and definition of Life Long learning policies in scientific subjects.
2. Collecting and reviewing information concerning the implementation of intervention strategies as far as of Life Long Learning in scientific subjects is concerned.
3. Carrying out of Case Studies on the field starting from the direct interviews with 10 secondary school teachers of Chemistry subject and 10 adult learners (in progress);
4. Production of a National Report focusing on the main barriers that affect the success of Life Long Learning in scientific subjects ( particularly in chemistry).

Time period:
01/03/2010 - 30/06/2010

Description of activities carried out:
WP2:

Activity 2.1:
More than 50 documents concerning the analysis and definition of Life Long learning policies in scientific subjects in Bulgaria as surveys, reports. papers, etc were collected and reviewed in order to highlight its main information, according to a common and shared Form. 35 of them were uploaded on the project’s portal.

Activity 2.2:
Information based on 15 reviewed ongoing and past projects, educational initiatives, training courses, intervention strategies as far as of Life Long learning in scientific subjects in Bulgaria was collected. The aim of the reviews was to carry out an analysis of the main existing documentation concerning the planning and implementation of Life long Learning policies in scientific issues with a specific focus on Chemistry, the main reasons and causes that create barriers to the full deployment of Life Long Learning strategies in chemistry, and the main successful national educational initiatives and methodological approaches at school level for raising students’ interest towards scientific issues (chemistry).

Activity 2.3:
We carried out direct interviews with:
– 10 secondary school teachers of Chemistry subject from Gabrovo, Sevlievo, Drianovo;
– 10 adult learners in Vocational training centre of Technical University of Gabrovo.
We created Case Studies based on the interviews with secondary school teachers of Chemistry subject and adult learners. The collected information will be a basis of a more in depth research to identify the main obstacles that affect the interest of students and adult learners, for Chemistry and describe the initiatives, methodological approaches, didactic solutions that could be effective to overcome the identified barriers.

Outcomes:
- 35 Reviewed documents concerning Life Long learning policies in scientific subjects;
- 15 Reviewed strategies concerning the implementation of initiatives and strategies of Life Long Learning in scientific subjects
- 20 Case Studies based on interviews were produced and uploaded on the project’s portal. The main barriers that affect the success of Life Long Learning in scientific subjects (chemistry) were identified

Evaluation of the work undertaken:
The work undertaken till now will be a good starting point for activities planned in WP 3 and 4.
The information collected from interviews will support the production of National and Transnational reports and will be a basis for identification of suitable practices to promote Lifelong Learning of scientific subjects.
