The Level Of Understanding Of Class Teacher Candidates’ Some Chemistry Concepts
Konur, K. B., & Ayas, A.
Paper of the national journal, Kastamonu Eğitim Dergisi.
Turkish
Form Master Programme students’ understanding levels of some chemistry terms in general chemistry lesson were tried to be determined in this study. For this purpose a multiple choice test of 14 questions was developed and a section was designed for the students to write the reasons why they chose those answers. After the test was applied to 135 students, it was analysed by dividing into 4 categories as answers, understanding, partially understanding, error and unanswered.
It was found that the students who participated in the study confused mass and weight terms using them interchangeably, they were still not aware of the atomic fission and chose atom instead of element for “the substance that could not be decomposed by any chemical method”, and they couldn’t relate physical and chemical events with their examples they encounter in their daily lives, and they couldn’t comprehend that the boiling point must be the value measured under 1 atm. Pressure, and they confused the examples related with acids and base and they couldn’t comprehend the characteristics of compound types.
This study provides useful knowledge about that if the science lesson which was started to be given at primary school level is taught more effectively or even given by a branch teacher because the basis of chemistry lesson is science lesson, a higher quality learning of science lesson may be possible. It was also emphasized that the fallacies of form masters may be passed onto the students unintentionally and this may cause the fallacies to become widespread so the correction of the fallacies of preservice teachers is extremely important. Additionally, the importance of follow up of the studies of this kind by active teachers and cooperation with the researchers and that these should be made mandatory in order to minimize misconceptions were mentioned.
