Experimental activities, educational programmes and educational material at the Secondary Education Laboratory Centers for Physical Sciences (EKFE)
Secondary Education Laboratory Centers for Physical Sciences (EKFE)
The personnel working at the 44 EKFEs all over Greece, give the opportunity to groups of secondary school children to perform chemistry experiments and aid teachers in designing and doing chemistry experiments in their own school units (either in class or in labs). They provide educational material (tests, videos, virtual lab experiments, simple chemical equipment) and they also organize events related to applications of chemistry in everyday life (informal lectures). They also prepare students for participating in the chemistry Olympiad and other chemistry competitions. The activities at the EKFEs are taking place all year round (September-June).
The activities and programmes of the EKFE aim at making chemistry attractive to the average student via simple, practical experiments. The initiative also aims at educating chemistry teachers in designing interesting and attractive teaching methodologies.
Secondary school pupils between 11-18 years old and chemistry teachers.
Chemistry experiments by using simple equipment and everyday life materials, production of educational materials by use of new technologies, organization of events (eg wine production).
The events and acitivities of the EKFE have national impact.
200-300 students participate in some activity of an average EKFE each year (8000-10000 students nationwide)
The initiative creates a positive attitude towards chemistry among the student community and cultivates creativity and general scientific skills (inquiry, discovery)
