TITLE OF THE INITIATIVE:

Oranges – refreshing for teaching chemistry

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INITIATIVE:


This teaching series represents a successful attempt to restructure prescribed curriculum content so that the subject classification, but of their daily life is paramount. The design is from Mrs. Espel The ingredients of the oranges from the bowl up to the juice can be considered in detail as the contents of the following topics: acid-base reactions, redox, flavorings and colorings.
The teaching concept is in addition to the teaching of that subject very well content to learn important chemical methods of investigation.
The problem-oriented approach with a number of experiments aims to stimulate to establish or reinforce interest in chemistry.
All experiments were selected so that they carried out quickly and with a low cost of materials are. Because of the simple experimental procedures the course was able to work largely independently.

OBJECTIVE OF THE INITIATIVE:

To create an easy accessiblle and efficient tool to motivate pupils for Chemistry issues.

ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE EVENT:

After an introductory talk about the fruit and its importance in everyday life, the students of chemistry A-course, investigate the labor, the orange peel and orange juice. Concrete teaching content includes the isolation of the orange oil by extraction, analysis of the oil by thin layer chromatography and gas chromatography The physico-chemical properties of the main component (limonene) are experimentally developed. The total acidity of the juice with a pH-metric titration can be determined. The citric acid isisolated using cation exchange identified by melting point determination. The ascorbic acid content is determined by redox titration.
The results of the individual groups are presented and discussed before the entire course. Order is also given to the promotion of communicative skills and learning presentation techniques.
