DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

The article is based on the data resulting from the international research project “Towards a Lifelong Learning Society in Europe: The Contribution of the Education System”. The analysis is focused on the support given by the enterprises to their employees with regard to continuing their formal education. Depending on the character, forms, and level of institutionalization of this support several models of firms’ policies with regard to formal education have been identified and described. Identified and analyzed is the impact on the attitude of the managerial teams to the participation of employees in formal education of the following factors:
• the specificity of the post-totalitarian economy and labor market;
• the business strategy and the mode of functioning of the particular firm;
• the state of the formal education system;
• the normative and financial basis of the adult education
In conclusion, the following recommendations are formulated with a view to increasing participation of the employees in the formal education:
• developing the institutions of the formal education as institutions for lifelong learning;
• introducing normative changes in order to stimulate enterprises to support the inclusion of the employees in the formal education system;
• disseminating experience and good practices in support of the participation of the employees in formal education.
