TITLE OF THE INITIATIVE:

NOESIS Foundation - Activities (Science Shows - Summer Camp)

REFERENT(S):

Science Center and Technology Museum – NOESIS. Non-profit cultural and training foundation located in Thessaloniki

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INITIATIVE:

The NOESIS center at Thessaloniki organizes a series of activities aiming at making scientific knowledge and technological innovation more accessible to the general public, starting with the young children (above 9 years old). The science show “The Science in your kitchen” lasts 30 minutes and takes place all weekends since October 2009 that it started (5 shows). Special shows can be organized only for organized school visits during the weekdays. The Summer Camp last 5 days and is organized 5 times during each summer.

OBJECTIVE OF THE INITIATIVE:

The initiative aims at bringing the world of science closer to the general public.

TARGET GROUP OF THE EVENT:

Children (usually 9-12 years old) and their parents.

ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE EVENT:

Demonstration experiments are carried out by animators. They are designed to be easy and as spectacular as possible. Some experiments involve participation of the public as well and there is also discussion going on related to the chemical phenomenon hidden “behind” the experiment. In the summer camp, children (30 in each camp) are exposed to the world of science and technology via specially designed team games and activities, nature visits, showings (planetarium, documentaries), etc.

IMPACT OF THE EVENT:

The events have very large demand especially among 9-12 year old school children and their parents. Their impact is mostly regional (northern Greece)

RESULTS REACHED:

Approximately 100 children (mostly 9-12 years old) and 50 adults (parents-teachers) have attended every week “The Science in your kitchen” science-show since its start in October 2009. The 5-day summer camp is being attended by 150 pupils (9-12 years old) each summer.

EVALUATION OF THE INITIATIVE:

This initiatives use a winner formula for scientific dissemination, for making the world of science accessible to the average person and for cultivating scientific curiosity and culture. Young children are also educated in the scientific way of thinking and the basis are set for “learning how to learn”. The animators of the science shows are not always scientists, however the educators of the summer school are scientists.
