Cross-Thematic Integrated Curriculum for Physics and Chemistry in Primary and Secondary Education
Pegagogical Institute – Ministry of Education, Life Long Learning and Religious Affairs
The Pedagogical Institute is the main educational policy maker in Greece. Its personnel, is comprised by scientists and educators of all levels of education (primary-secondary-tertiary) and has recently produced the new Cross-Thematic Integrated Curriculum for Physics and Chemistry in Primary and Secondary Education. This initiative started a few years ago (2003) and still goes on. Except of the new curriculum, the new textbooks and supplementary educational material are yet to be produced.
The initiative aims at implementing a new curriculum and method for teaching sciences in primary and secondary education. It will encourage students to search and discover new knowledge on their own and to be actively involved in the performance of laboratory experiments. In the end, the students should master the ability of “learning to learn”, a prerequisite for life long learning.
Primary and secondary education pupils (6-18 years old) and teachers
Design of new curriculum – Production of new textbooks and supplementary educational material engaging new technologies – Implementation of novel teaching methodologies
This initiative has national impact
When fully applied the initiative will affect education nationwide (primary and secondary)
The initiative, if fully applied, will change drastically the teaching approach and methodology of Physics and Chemistry by giving emphasis to the discovery of knowledge, to the development of critical thinking and to acquiring the ability of “learning how to learn”
