On the image of chemistry and on its teaching
Aldo Borsese (University of Genoa)
Paper published by “ La Chimica e l’ Industria” (Chemistry and Industry) – National journal of the Italian Chemical Society (SCI)
Italian
The paper takes into consideration a nowadays contradictory aspect: chemistry's importance for our society is growing day by day but young people do not choose studies in the sphere of chemistry .
In author's opinion the reasons for this are the following:
- the time dedicated to the teaching of chemistry at school is limited;
- the way of teaching chemistry consists in giving concepts and information to passive students;
- the popularization of chemistry and its social communication is carried out in a superficial and inadequate way.
On the contrary the teaching of chemistry should be based on the cooperation between teacher and student, both taking an active role. The emotional component and the cognitive structure of the students must also be taken into consideration. Finally it is very important to show students that they are able to understand chemistry and this should comence at primary school.
The document contains valuable suggestions addressed to teachers of both compulsory and high schools. They should cooperate to build a teaching path based on the active role of the students in the teaching-learning process, starting from primary school and going on to the end of high school.
