Educational Programs at the Lavrion Industrial and Handicrafts Museum
Lavrion Industrial and Handicrafts Museum
The Industrial and Handicrafts Museum at Lavrion is located in an area where mining activities and metal extraction (lead-silver) was actively taking place in the ancient times up until a few decades ago. The Museum is organized a series of educational programmes designed in specific thematic areas and following the cross-thematic approach. The thematic areas involve chemistry themes such as metal extraction from ore and metal reactions. The programmes can be attended by a group of 30 people, it last approximately 1 hour and a half and take place every week all year round.
This initiative aims at bringing out the connection of chemistry with everyday life, since metals are present in many aspects of our lives. By performing simple experimental activities and by attending the interactive exhibits, pupils cultivate the basic scientific skills (inquiry, problem solving).
Secondary school pupils between 9-18 years old
Simple experimental activities, simple constrauction, interactive exhibits
The event has mainly regional impact in the Athens Metropolitan area
The event is attended by at least 40 pupils every week
This initiative is a form of non-formal education which helps young people learn chemistry by engaging in fun activities. Its cross-thematic approach is very useful for bringing out the close connection of chemistry with other sciences and with everyday life activities.
