PARSEL (Popularity and Relevance of Science Education for Science Literacy)

PARSEL is a European Project carried out by a consortium of 8 Universities in 7 countries (Greece, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Israel) and the the International Council of Associations for Science Education (UK). It lasted for a total period of 30 months (ended in March 2009). During the project, alternative teaching material was developed and tested in order to promote popularization of science and increase the level of scientific literacy.
The initiative aims at promoting scientific literacy and enhancing popularity and relevance of science teaching and learning. The project aimed at maiking available alternative teaching materials to teachers to promote student interest of science in schools without alienating the teaching from the curriculum intentions.
Mainly science teachers and pupils in primary and secondary education but also the general public of all ages.
Development, testing and dissemination of science education modules for teaching physical sciences in grade 7 upwards.
This initiative has national and international impact
The initiative produced a series of very high quality alternative teaching material related to science teaching. The material has been disseminated to science teachers in all 8 countries involved.
The initiative has very high value for its effort to disseminate and popularize science and the scientific way of thinking and consequently increase the level of scientific literacy.
