Actual didactics and didactics of chemistry
Angelo Bonomi
Paper from the local magazine of the ITI Institute ‘Il Cobianchi’
Italian
The author criticizes the traditional didactics of chemistry, based on teaching of laws, models and principles developed in the XIX century, such as the concept of mole and the octet rule to explain the chemical bond. He claims that new concepts should be introduced, such as nanotechnology, to give a different idea of chemistry and to attract students’ interest. Moreover, he examines in detail metaphoric projection, as a tool to explain concepts difficult to visualize directly, such as the Schroedinger equation or the orbital as a high probability density region.
The article is be very interesting, as it tries to confront the problem of the best way to teach chemistry with the introduction of new subjects and the frequent use of the metaphoric projection to explain the most difficult concepts.
